Barriers to Coffee Ground Recycling: The Challenge of Cleaning Procedures

Our desktop research revealed a reluctance to recycle coffee grounds, despite their potential for dehumidifying and deodorizing. This prompted a deeper investigation into the cleaning process, where two primary pain points emerged as hindering the reuse of coffee grounds: the perceived complexity of cleaning procedures.

Design concept

What if the process of drying up coffee ground could be elevated?

For an easy-cleaning process, I came up with the idea of an “independent drip tray,” which stores the used grounds. It’s easy to operate, too, as users only need to set up the heat. After use, there are fans that can dry the grounds quickly.

Form-giving strategy

Not only functional, but also satisfying. The Streamline style with organic form

Compared to trendy minimalistic style, coffee machines stand out with their emotional-oriented form, demonstrating craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and even a lifestyle.

This led to the form-giving strategy for Platypus—creating a catchy, quirky style that blended with cultural heritage. Streamline was positioned as the main character in this design, with its evident curves, silver strip, and metal decoration.

Color, Material and Finish

High-contrast color set with glossy coating.

The Streamline design is known for its mirror-like finish and bold color scheme. The choice of sapphire as a color makes it another fun device that can make a kitchen countertop or coffee area cheerful. It is also an elegant addition, made possible by the glossy, mirror-like finish. The Ferrari red accent and the silver details add the perfect contrast.

Model making

SLA Model with mirror-like painting execution

To accurately showcase the chosen CMF, I created a detailed model using SLA printing, followed by meticulous post-processing, including polishing and painting. During the painting process, I applied diluted layers of paint, building up the surface gradually to achieve a glossy finish. This fine model-making was essential in bringing the design vision to life and ensuring its visual appeal in the final photography.
