Versuni : Product Designer Intern

Collaborated with cross-cultural designers in Amsterdam, showcasing advanced rendering and modeling ability while mainly working on Philips coffee products

OVERVIEW

Beyond an Intern: Contributing as a Junior Designer

Stepping into the experience design team at Versuni in Amsterdam, I quickly transitioned from a typical intern role to contributing like a junior designer. My responsibilities spanned multiple product lines, with a primary focus on Philips' coffee products. Over six months, I sharpened my skills in advanced rendering, sketching, and 3D modeling, actively participating in various design stages—from conceptualization to production-ready models. The overall contributions included:

05+
Sketch Workshops around categories
03+
Actively engaged in Coffee Projects
20+
Detailed modeling in Rhino
48+
Photorealistic renders in Keyshot

Contribution

Philips Baristina

Proposed a future generation of Philips Baristina with finely tuned models created in Rhino.

During my internship, I mainly contributed to the Philips Baristina , a next-gen espresso machine with innovative brewing interactions.
I was responsible for conceptualizing and developing one of the future design concepts, while also assisting on other 4 concepts for the comprehensive design proposal. With these effort, My mentor and I  successfully delivered the result to the team, and push this new project into next phase of development.

Throughout the process, our goal was to capture the subtle nuances of aesthetic form while ensuring manufacturability. Using Rhino, I iterated on the proposal, employing both Zebra and curvature analyses. This approach ensured thehigh quality of the model. All curves were adhered to at least G2 curvature continuity standards, achieving a balance of visual elegance and technical precision.

photorealistic renders

Responsible for 25+ hero renders for global product announcements, showcasing products across brands such as Philips, L'Or Barista, and Senseo.

I was responsible for the development of over 25 photorealistic hero renders for global product launches, meticulously crafted to align with the Philips Design Language and ensure visual consistency across diverse product lines.

To achieve this, I honed my expertise in fine-tuning renders, optimizing sampling settings, and managing complex scenes in KeyShot. Notably, one of the published renders—for the Baristina milk frother—contributed to the product winning the Red Dot Award 2024.

CMF Visualization

Developed and visualized new CMF details for coffee machines.

Throughout this process, I actively contributed to the exploration of Color, Material, and Finish (CMF) options. To manage multiple iterations and refine nuanced CMF variations, I developed proficiency in creating photorealistic renders using material graphs in KeyShot. This expertise enabled me to effectively visualize material possibilities and communicate design concepts clearly with other team members, fostering collaboration and alignment.

Collaboration

Mainly assisted design leads in the design team while collaborating with other professions.

This experience taught me how to close collaborate with design leads on multiple projects. Simultaneously, I honed my ability to effectively communicate with stakeholders across different departments. This role allowed me to understand the needs and expectations, as well as the different communication styles of other positions.

MIND LEARNING

Strong self-management in a transparent working style

At Versuni, I gained valuable experience working alongside multiple senior designers as a junior-level team member. "As a newcomer to my design career, being involved in multiple projects simultaneously was initially overwhelming. This experience taught me the critical importance of clear communication and maintaining transparency, which allowed me to stay on the same page with other designers and contribute effectively to our collaborative efforts."

Moreover, this experience enhanced my self-management skills in the context of an international company, allowing me to set realistic expectations for my work during discussions and “speak out” throughout the design process. Ultimately, this internship drove me to become a more "industrialized" designer, capable of collaborating seamlessly with team members at various levels.
